As Trevor sat in his seat at Sunday school he noticed the bulletin lying in front of him on the table. On the cover was a colorful picture of a large city with a gigantic wall around it. Above the picture were the words, JOSHUA AND THE BATTLE OF JERICHO.
After everyone arrived in class, the teacher began talking about what they were going to learn. Trevor tried hard to listen to what the teacher was saying, but his mind kept wandering back to the picture of Joshua and the battle of Jericho…. Joshua…. battle…Jeric….
Suddenly, Trevor heard the sound of footsteps. He turned around and there he saw the large city and the gigantic wall just like in the picture in Sunday school! On the outskirts of the bastion there stood a large crowd of people. They were dressed strangely and were actually marching around the walled city. In front of the crowd was a large chest carried by men, followed by seven priests carrying ram horns. Atop the trunk sat a large chair decorated like a throne.
"You over there, get back in line," someone yelled to Trevor. Not knowing what else to do Trevor ran over to the crowd and began marching in stride. As he was marching he noticed the clothes he was wearing. " These aren’t my clothes, what is this," he said loudly, enough to be heard.
A man next to him asked, "What are you talking about? That’s your tunic you wear everyday."
Trevor thought to himself parenthetically, "This looks like a dress; it comes all the way down to my ankles." Trevor asked the man "What is your name?"
" My name is Seth and I am an Israelite. What is your name?" he returned.
" My name is Trevor, and I am an American."
"An Am-er-ic-can?"
" Yeah you know the people in North America,"
" I have never heard of such a place."
"Whatever, so what are we doing here?"
"An angel of the Lord appeared to our audacious leader Joshua and told him that this city would become ours if we bear the Ark of the Covenant followed by seven priests holding ram horns and marching around the city once everyday for six days. But the seventh day, today, we must march around seven times and then stand back. We will shout; while the priests blow the ram horns and the walls will come tumbling down."
" Sweet, how many more laps do we have left?"
"Three," Seth answered looking strangely at his new friend.
Trevor looked around and noticed that the wall looked a lot different than the ones he had seen in pictures. " Seth, what are these walls made out of?"
" They are made out of mud bricks and stone. The walls protect the people inside from their enemies."
"This is our last lap" Trevor exclaimed to Seth. Trevor had been counting. He couldn’t wait to see the gigantic wall fall down.
" Yes it is," said Seth, " Momentarily, we will stand back and shout."
" Now!" Seth said to Trevor. Immediately all you could hear were the sounds of shouting and horns blowing. Trevor trembled in fear. The noise from the shouts and horns were deafening. The walls started to crumble and fall. The Israelites began running from the crumbling wall shouting in victory. Trevor stood there in disbelief.
"Trevor!" yelled Seth " Watch Out!" Trevor looked up and saw a large brick heading right for him!
"Move!" Seth screamed.
" Trevor, honey. Trevor, are you alright?" his teacher asked.
" Uh, what, what, oh, yeah, sorry, I’m fine."
"It’s your turn to read. Please, turn to Joshua chapter six verse five and begin."
